Once you've made the decision to install either a solar or wind renewable energy system, what are the important questions to ask potential installers? This online class starts from the beginning by helping you locate installers, and discusses important considerations and characteristics to look for.     Online Anytime Webinar

    In this online six-module course, you will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of U.S. energy consumption and a detailed primer on today's solar energy applications. The difference between solar thermal systems and solar photovoltaic (PV) applications and technologies will be clarified. Climate, geographic, siting, and zoning considerations will be discussed. Finally, you will learn how to locate a contractor, and how solar can add value to a structure.  (4 hours)

        •    Recognize the economics and environment driving the adoption of renewable energy
        •    Identify basic aspects of solar power and the technologies that harvest it
        •    Recall the role site characteristics play in a successful solar powered installation
        •    Differentiate between solar electric and solar thermal technologies

    Howard Alan Architects has 30 years of experience as a design/build group specializing in organic architecture, passive and active solar and alternative energy conservation.

    Solar Architecture 203 will focus on how to incorporate passive and active solar energy into building design and why it is important.

    Howard Alan's Studio is in Lincoln Park about 1.5 miles east of Lake Michigan.  The entire 2nd floor is designed to capture the sun's heat and store it in the masonry walls, concrete floor, and the 5 fiberglass tubes of water.  A radiant heating system is embedded in the concrete floors for back up heat.  The building is insulated on the exterior side of the outer walls acting exactly like a winter coat to keep our body heat from radiating to a colder exterior.

    This course provides students with a working knowledge of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems. It is designed for individuals wanting to gain an in-depth knowledge of PV systems, design techniques, equipment functionality as well as installation components and methods.  This course has some "hands on" mock installation components in a lab environment to apply visual as well as skills learned. 

    This is for new or intermediate solar individuals wanting to gain foundational working knowledge with regard to producing high quality PV systems.
     
    This course is designed to provide the knowledge needed to pass entry level certification exams that can be proctored during the course. 

    Learning Outcomes

    • Describe the design of high quality solar systems and the components used for high efficiency
    • Electricity basics, solar energy fundamentals and photovoltaic module types and fundamentals
    • Designing proper size photovoltaic systems
    • System component integration and understanding
    • Apply solar calculations to determine whether a solar project is viable at a specific location
    • Analyze performance outcomes and troubleshoot problems
    • Assure proper installation and incorporate proper safety procedures
    • Discuss the growing markets and applications in efficient photovoltaic systems
    • Apply the benefits of solar technology to improve our economic future

    The Solar Entrepreneurship 204 seminar is for the
    small business owner interested in adding solar as an additional service or in starting a new small business.  It will develop a deeper understanding about solar opportunities in Illinois and equip you with market data, incentives and local resources to get you started quickly on the path to success.
